From almost any point on shore, the Picos de Europa can be seen in the background. The name comes from the sailors of the past: on their way back from the New World, the Picos were the first visible point of Europa. The Picos stands majestically, like an explosion towards the blue heavens. It towers over a region of raging rivers known for their salmon and trout, vast orchards and quaint farmhouses.

The climate of Asturias is that of the Spanish Atlantic, characterized by year-round rainfall and moderate temperatures with the exception of the high mountain areas. This near perfect climate makes the Asturian holiday unforgettable.
Major attractions are the Way of Santiago with its innumerable monuments and the Ruta de la Plata , "silver route," one of the oldest lines of communication in the Iberian Peninsula . Both routes lead to Asturias .

Artisanship and gastronomy have an exalted reputation and surely you must not miss the excellent sea-food along the coast and, in the mountains, typical dishes such as Fabada , made of a special sort of beans, blood sausage. The region also produces a variety of delicious cheese specialties, and of course, cider.
Cities to consider when traveling to Austrias are Oviedo, Gijon and Aviles . UNESCO declared all three cities Patrimony of the Humanity , due to their outstanding monuments. Moreover, approximately a third of Asturias has been given special status as Protected Natural Space -- recognition of its outstanding beauty and value. UNESCO has named four specific nature reserves as dedicated reserves of the biosphere.
