Food & drink

The cookery of Llanes is a mélange of various influences -- geographical and topographical characteristics, climate, as well as its traditional and cultural factors. All these make the gastronomic offerings of Llanes wide and varied.

Vegetables and vegetable stews are the most characteristic of the area although the fish and seafood are of a quality envied in other parts of Spain. In any part of the town, you can enjoy all sorts of fresh fish and seafood such as grouper, sea bream, monkfish, griddled sardines, hake (griddled, in vegetable sauce, or in cider), or the delicious rolled tuna. Of shellfish the most noteworthy are lobster, edible crab, spider crab, barnacles and prawns. Of course, we must not fail to mention the other products of the sea -- octopus, squid, mussels, clams, cockles and the deservedly famous anchovies from Llanes .

The Fabada Asturiana is the most popular dish, a stew prepared with white beans. Another well known dish is "pantruque" which is made with cornflower, bacon, persil and onion in equal quantities - egg, chorizo, pork belly and black pudding. Be careful though, because it goes without saying that this dish is awash in fats and proteins!

Potatoes with peas, vegetable stew, green beans and meat are typically served in festivals and enjoyed by multitudes. Other typical fiesta fares are cornflower cakes with fried egg and chorizo or tomato. Typical desserts are apple and almond tarts, milk and rice pudding, and the famous ice cream "Peñasanta" which is interestingly, both cold and hot.
Due to the pastures and plains, Llanes is also a producer of a great number of delectable cheeses such as Los Carriles, Caldueñín, Porrua, Pría and Vidiago.
